a discourse on plum pudding // 2002-04-11

this morning in chem class, my professor was telling us all about the structure of the atom, and how each part was discovered and all that. turns out, this guy thomson first discovered that the atom was made up of positively charged matter with electrons moving around in it. he figured the atom was like a big squishy ball of mush, and the electrons were very tiny chunks. the english called this model of the atom the "plum pudding" model, because they thought the atom resembled plum pudding.

well, once he said that, all i could think about was plum pudding... how delicious it sounds, how i once ate some when i went to manchester with shannon to visit her friend, pip, and pip's mum made us vegan plum pudding (because i was vegan at the time) and i thought plum pudding was just about the best thing i'd ever had. and then i thought about how it would be fun to make a plum pudding, because no one in the states ever makes puddings, and i could be, like, the hit of a party if i brought plum pudding along. and then i started thinking about jamie oliver, and how i bet he makes a tasty plum pudding, and isn't he the most adorable man alive?

and then, chemistry class was over and all i learned is that this guy thomson came up with the plum pudding model of the atom.

sigh.
