summer camp dream // 2002-05-30

ok, here's my dream.

i would like to start an adult summer camp. and not one of those "themed" summer camps where adults go to learn how to trust coworkers, or ones where they go somewhere like a dude ranch to get in tune with the rawness of life. and this would definitely not be a spa of any kind. nope, my summer camp would be just that. a place you go in the summer for a couple of weeks that has cabins with bunk beds, counselors who invariably know how to play joan baez songs on the guitar, crafts, swimming, a cafeteria, and campfires at night. but for people over 25.

here's a description of all the activities offered at camp orkila, the summer camp i went to for many, many years when i was younger. it was on orcas island in the san juans and was the most beautiful, wonderful place in the world:

Boating, Archery, Arts and Crafts, Ocean Activities, Evening Unit Games, Swimming, Riflery, Backpacking, Mini-Kayaks, Ropes Course, Nature, Sports, Island Trips, Climbing Wall, Skill Clinics, Campfires, Farm, Marine Biology, as well as Drama/Skits.

how fun does all that sound? don't you think adults need something like this, too? a place to go where you don't necessarily know anyone at first, but you meet people and make friendship bracelets and send each other letters when camp is over? in fact, i think this should be mandatory for all adults every summer!
