such a night // 2003-01-12

problems with the elvis invitationals at emp, friday, january 10, 2003:

  • emp is the most poorly organized musical venue ever. we had to wait in a line for at least 15 minutes outside to pick up our will call tickets, only to be let inside to have to wait in yet another line for will call, only to wait in a line going up the stairs to have our tickets taken and our hands stamped.
  • the crowd was too old and too obnoxious. yeah, call me ageist, but they just didn't know how to behave at a show. plus, we actually watched a woman have what i think was a stroke in the middle of the show. a stroke!
  • there were 24 amateur elvis' performing, and emp had the gall to have an opening band. do you have any idea how long it takes 24 amateur elvis' to perform? if you did, you would know there's no need for an opening band, let alone one that would probably play at your parent's 30th high school reunion.
  • and most importantly, the elvis' just didn't get it. okay, so i'm probably way uptight about this, but what made elvis so great was his charisma and his voice. he didn't need a white jumpsuit and karate chops to make him wonderful. nearly all the impersonators only mocked him, taking the easy way out and choosing the old, fat elvis over the young, charismastic elvis. the only two who i think had any respect for him were an 11 year old kid and a woman.
  • ... and after two hours my lower back started killing me, so we left early to go to bed.
