two lists // 2005-09-17

um, i don't know what to say. i have been very confused lately: what time is it? what day is it? what season is it? where am i? what am i doing? etc. c and i have been traveling around to all the local gardens and nurseries and the like that feature native plants in anticipation of our future garden. some terrific places in seattle to check out:

  • south seattle community college arboretum: their native plant section is just getting started, but overall this place rocks.
  • native plants at the burke museum: the entire front of the burke museum at the uw is landscaped with native plants, and most everything is tagged so you know what you're looking at.
  • native plant nursery at sand point/magnuson park: there's a sweet little nursery here that you might not notice if you weren't looking for it. they're having a plant sale in a couple of weekends that c and i are going to check out. also, if you head out there, wander up into the enormous p-patch and admire all the beautiful produce and flowers. it smells good here.
  • the center for urban horticulture: oh man, this place is great. all sorts of pretty plants, a serviceberry grove that makes me want one of my own, plus acres of native meadows that take you down to the shores of lake washington. i had no idea this was even here.
  • ravenna park native plant restoration project: there's a tiny patch of native plants that you might stumble across while wandering through ravenna park (just minutes away from our house). it's small but plants are labeled and they have licorice fern!
in addition there's always the arboretum and countless parks and nurseries that have lots of pretty things. i've decided that my favorite new tree is the paperbark maple, and even though it's not native we're going to plant at least one in the strip in front of our house.

the bark is a pretty red that peels like a madrone, and the leaves are not simple maple leaves, but look like a maple leaf if you put three leaves together.

and while i'm at it with the lists, here are some really good movies to see:
