time travel curry // 2004-12-16

i just got home from dinner out and a party with school friends. as c and i were walking in the door of the apartment, i carried a paper bag that held our dinner left overs. we were chatting about this and that as we walked in, and i took the take out bag and put in the fridge. then, as i walked toward the living room i noticed a take out carton perched on the edge of a chair. i looked at c and asked if he knew what it was. he didn't. we picked up the carton and opened it, and it held the exact same avocado curry that we had eaten for dinner! i puzzled over this. had we gone out to eat at this same restaurant a while back and accidently left this container of curry on the chair and forgot about it... for weeks? did someone break into our apartment while we were out and leave behind this curry on the chair? i looked at the window next to the chair. did someone throw the curry through the window and it landed on the chair and it just happened to be the same curry we had partially eaten at dinner? no, the window was closed and sealed. or was someone spying on us at dinner, ordered the same food we had, and purposely put this curry in our apartment while we were out in order to mock us? or did this curry time travel from dinner to now, or time travel from later to now, and end up on the chair? i swear, i stared at this left over curry for a very long time, trying to figure out how this could have happened.

then c suggested i look at the left over bag i had just deposited in the fridge to see if, perhaps, there was a missing curry container. and, of course, there was. in addition to a wet, curry-soaked hole in the bottom of the bag, where it had fallen out as i twirled it around when i walked into the apartment, proceeded by a trail of curry splatters that led from the front door to the resting place of the curry container. by chance, it landed on the chair just so as i walked into the kitchen, and neither c nor i noticed this strange event because we were gabbing so animatedly.

of course, i feel very silly now for even thinking that time traveling curry might exist, but you have to understand that at that moment, my mind had been seriously blown.
